-11 Degrees with -24 wind chill…
A quick entry into the "how cold" file....this am Steamboat was at -11 at about 8 am as most of the crew made there way to work. Add in a 5mph breeze and you've got -24F wind chill...add in the 10mph speed on the bike and ....well, it was cold. This morning all of my senses said drive to work as I have been over the last 3 mornings...(trying to kick the nasty bug that seems to have most of Steamboat in its jaws). I just couldn't stand to do it....so this morning my 1985 Toyota Landcruiser got a break from me starting it up in subzero temps. Temps like these take some life out of the old girl. I'm sure she was glad to see me ride off on my bike. She's got 194,000 miles....and I've owned her for almost 18 years now. A record for my family who seem to go through cars like water. Yep, she still drives well enough for valley use.
I've switched commuter rigs due to the fact that my normal cross bike is getting a re-blast job and some much needed new decals. So for now I'm on the Gristle mountain rig with a twist...I wanted to have a studded tire up front but the disc caliper got in the way...so, remove front brake, insert studded cross wheel and viola....a mutt bike with some grip up front. No front brake, but you really don't need it when putting along at 10mph.
It looks like our forecast is calling for a "warm" up of 24 degrees on Friday. ZSUPER!
That's all for now.

Brrrr! Same goes here though. Highs on Saturday are supposed to be 0 here in MN.
Man I thought moving to CO would be awesome, but boy that is Cold!
I suppose I might need a fancy Moots jacket to keep myself warm. Got anything with batteries?
Doesn’t the Yampa freeze solid in this weather? When I lived in SD the creek, that flowed through the town I lived in, was one of only a couple in the WORLD that froze from the bottom up. When she was frozen, she was FROZEN! Never had to worry about falling through the ice!
I commend you on your landcruiser loyalty. I had one just like yours and the manual choke always seemed to get it done in subzero temps, but I sure hated to do it to her anytime it was colder than minus 10. She gave up the ghost a few years ago. It was the salt that finally killed her. One more reason I now rely on the ti every morning I’m not running late.
