I went to Moab to ride the road……..
If you’ve ever been to Moab chances are you rode your mountain bike. Road biking is not the first thing to come to mind when you here that name. You think..Slick Rock, Porcupine Rim, Amasa Back, and Poison Spider…all the classic Moab mountain bike routes. Well, if you are headed there for a mountain bike retreat, really treat yourself and take the roadie as well. We just returned from the Moab Skinny Tire Festival and over the 4 days we covered anything from rolling hills, steep climbs, wind and some snow. There is such a variety of riding to be done in the area. My favorite was the La Sal mountain loop. About 65 miles and just about 7000 feet of climbing on some really steep roads. My knees hated me afterwards but the views and adventure made up for off the couch suffering. The festival was great, low key event with the money going towards a much worthy cause. Saul Rasin was there riding with the bunch and giving a pretty good talk about his road to recovery.
If you are looking for a great way to kick off the season next year and want to contribute to a great cause, save the date for the Moab Skinny Tire Festival 2009.
See you there next year!

I’ll second the La Sal mountain loop as one of the best road rides i’ve ever done, great views, no cars, STEEP switchback euro-style climbs. It dosn’t get any better.
The road rides in Moab are a hidden gem. The “Big Nasty” up into the La Sal Mountains is epic and the river road to Cisco is drop dead gorgeous.
riding arches national park first thing in the morning (before all the tour busses arrive!) with tunes blasting is most enjoyable too!
Big Nasty gave me a nasty beat down.
