Not to devulge any trade secrets, but yes, we build the front end around a 29 ride height, adjust bb height for the Zirkel rear end.

And presto~one of the best riding mountain bikes I’ve ever ridden.

It’s built up pretty much like the picture above...Sram xo shifting, XTR crank, Old Hayes MAG Plus disc, Bontranger front wheel, Mavic SL rear, Reba fork, Moots stem & post, Salsa 31.8 carbon bar. Kind of a mut of a bike at the moment.

This year I’m going with full XTR disc, SLR rear wheel, Handbuilt front wheel...I should be able to drop 1 to 1.5 pounds if all goes as planned.  We’ll see...I’ll update as project 96er moves forward.

What mtb tires are choice for Steamboat trails?

jon, THANK YOU!  and i got another question… in reading the review of the gristle (96er) on the moab dreamride sight, the author mentioned he felt the head angle was a bit too steep and tweaked it to 71.5 w/ a tire change?  what do you think about that critique and can one custom order the bike w/ different head angles?  your experience and advice most appreciated!

mtbkfl~I guess it would be possible to tweak a head angle a bit with a taller tire (tread to rim) but keep in mind you need about 1’’ to make 1 degree of change.  You can order a custom with what ever head angles you wish, within reason.  We’ve been building bikes for over 25 years and through those years know a bad idea when we see one.  Also, he was talking about the MXZ..our new 4’’ travel 29er.  The Gristle has only been ridden by some of us here at Moots and dealers that attended Dirt Demo 2007 at Interbike.  At this point it’s a true one off.  But we can make more!

jc, thanks bud!  i am not a bike geek so i am way more comfortable relying on a professionals advice.  so the gristle is not what was tested by dreamride and in your opinion, the ‘stock’ head angle of say, an 18 inch gristle frame is spot on?
and you would not recommend changing the head angle to this here non bike geek?  thanks in advance for your time etc and hope you’re having a good week…

I’m riding what would be called a 19’’ Gristle...I feel the head tube angle is spot on for sure.  As all of the Gristles will be made as custom we can do most anything...however I would say the angles should follow our Mooto-X Ybb to our MXZ ranges.  We’ve found them to ride really well in a variety of conditions.

I’ve ridden the Gristle twice, both 15+ mile rides with a wide range of terrain, it’s awesome. I come from a DH background and felt the bike’s handling was solid going up or down. I’m 6’1” with a 34” inseam and felt the 19 was a tad small, Jon’s a hair shorter than me.

Been out sick sorry for the delay on getting back to you...I’m 5 11.5 w/ 34’’ inseam...I’ve always ridden our 19’’ size Ybb and built this first Gristle around the same TT lenght.

will the gristle be available with rohloff speedhub and standard rohloff chain tensioner?

The Gristle comes as disc only rear end with no braze ons for the rear of the bike to accmodate the Rohloff routing.  You can however use the chain tensioner, Speedbone and the OEM 2 and zip tie the shift cables down the seat stay. 

So in the end...yes, you can run the Rohloff hub with the above options.
