Tradition….
A sweet surprise arrived the other day here at Moots. A package from our good friends at John Knoops Bicycle Shop in The Netherlands. They have been a Moots dealer since 2003 and play host to a fine bicycle expo held in February. In January of 2006 I got to visit them and attend the bicycle expo to represent Moots. I was the only non-euro at the expo....a bit of a novelty for some, but they made me feel like family. Back to the surprise....after opening the package it took me a few minutes to figure out what I was looking at....chocolate letters...cool enough, but wait...they spelled out the word MOOTS! Soon enough the phone rang and it was Peet van Hout on the other end calling from Holland...he wanted to order a frame and at the same time filled me in on the tradition in The Netherlands. It goes like this....
During the 17th and 18th centuries, children in the Netherlands put their shoes by the fireplace for Sinter Klaas (Saint Nicholas), a bishop who lived in the 4th century and was known for bringing gifts to the poor. According to the Dutch tradition, every 5th of December Sinter Klaas would fly from rooftop to rooftop on his white horse while dropping sweets down the chimney into the children's shoes. He would also leave the chocolates to spell out the child’s name.....
We are honored to be part of the tradition and can tell you those chocolate letters did not last long around the Moots lunch room.
