Dave and I share milk

Dave and I share milk. He typically beats me to work by at least a couple of minutes, and is on his way to the coffee pot with a bag of Big Gear Grind by the time I lug my yawning self up the stairs. We spend a few minutes in the Moots kitchen joking while the coffee brews, and inevitably, I pilfer milk from him. I recently tried to repay my milk debt, but Dave’s internal milk gauge had already kicked in and he’d already bought some. For the next few days we’ll be serving lattes if anyone wants one…
A strange twist of fate came while playing darts in a local Buffalo pub one night. Dave had a couple (3,4 maybe 5) beers in him and swore to move to where his dart landed. And thus, he moved to Steamboat. He was aiming for Telluride.
For twelve years he worked (bought outdoor equipment) at the local Ski Haus. Dave Dietrich is a wealth of knowledge if you need advice on anything to do with outdoor activities, from new ski boots to having your toenail drilled after you stub your toe in your new ski boots. In fact, his favorite things to do occur in the wild: fly fishing, photographing wildlife, riding bikes and raising his kids.
Speaking of kids, Dave and his wife Val (beautiful + awesome baker + Mountain Hardwear employee= perfect 10) just had their second baby, Amanda, last summer. Amanda’s big brother, Dylan just turned four a few weeks ago. Both have red hair and are cute as buttons. Friday night is movie night, Dylan usually picks. So when I’m pilfering milk on Mondays, Dave tells me how Ice Age 2, Finding Nemo or Cars was for the eighth time. When he’s not watching Pixel films, Dave chooses movies like ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, ‘Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail’ or ‘Old School’. Starting to see a trend here? (see bios of Sam Gordon and Caleb Franklin…)
Although movie night usually includes pizza, Mr. Dietrich is also fond of coconut crusted tuna, fish tacos, Pop Rocks and, I never would have guessed it, beer.
So, after paying his dues at Ski Haus, Dave was hired for a sales position at Moots. He was a natural selection because of his ability to learn an outdoor product through osmosis. A typical day for Dave includes waking up way too early (life can be challenging with two kids and two black labs), coffee, more coffee, work, go home to romp with the kids and go to bed.
If the realm of reality didn’t exist, and Dave could do what he wanted for a day, he’d still wake up super early. This time in a cabana in the Bahamas, to drink a quick cup of java and catch the tide for some early morning bonefishing. After the sunrise, he’d head back to the cabana to play with Val, the kids and dogs all day on the beach. Grab a quick margarita and find himself fishing again in the evening tide, watch the sun go down and call it a day.
Dave’s first pet was a Japanese fighting fish named Booger, who after dying from traumatic shock, was buried at sea in a tiny wooden casket. This was during Dave’s college years. His three favorite books include ‘Winterdance’, ‘The River Why’ and ‘A Field Guide to Western Birds’, with the Phone Book coming in as a close forth. His favorite childhood activity included jumping his Big Wheel over his little brother.
