Sam Gordon
Slow, steady steps… Ka-Pow! And Sam is in a fine samurai stance at the top of the stairs. Outlined by the doorway, he reminds me of an extra from ‘Harry-Karry’. From karate chop position, he walks through the door and often we find ourselves saying, ‘Good Morning!’ with an overly extended wave that uses the whole arm. Naturally we’ve gone from ancient Asia to synchronized swimming moves without a flinch…
If Sam was an action figure he’d come equipped with a coffee mug, a Moots hoodie, sweat bands and the guitar that he plays in a band called the Plagiarists. No, the Plagiarists are not a musically inclined gang of bandits and robbers, they’re Steamboat’s punk band of choice, and a damn good one at that. Unlike most punk bands, (be it good or bad) the Plagiarists seem to have a no whining policy, no political agenda and as Sam claims, most of their songs ‘don’t contain any noble subject matter’.
Aside from being a badass, Sam enjoys skiing and cooking. Since we’ve had a pretty disappointing winter season here, it’s safe to assume that Sam spent a lot of time by the stove cooking for his Drew Barrymore look alike girlfriend, Juli.
Sam moved here from Alaska and spent about five years working in some of Steamboat’s more impressive kitchens including the Catamount Clubhouse, Harwig’s and the Steamboat Grand. After mastering the restaurant scene, he answered an ad in the Steamboat Today and became a finisher for Moots. Sam is a dedicated and hard worker and we’re proud that he has become head of Moots’ finishing department.
A typical day in the life of Mr. Gordon involves hassling Butch (we’ll get to him another day) and putting all those finishing details on Moots frames (carefully applying suspension, hand chasing and facing threads, using a tiny screwdriver to manipulate those itty-bitty screws that hold your headbadge on, and basically anything else that would make a normal man crazy.)
Someday, Sam would like to move back to Alaska with Juli or possibly go on tour with Devo… But for now, he can be found eating Vietnamese food, watching movies including anything from Monty Python, ‘Young Frankenstein’, and ‘Big Trouble in Little China’, and reading Edgar Allen Poe, or his favorite book- ‘Fools Progress’ by Abbey.
And who would have thought? –Sam also likes to sleep.
