Matt Pronovost
Matt has one big leg. What makes his big leg bigger than his regular leg is a titanium rod in his shin. You wouldn’t notice unless he pointed it out to you, but his right leg is a bit bigger than his left.
Even bigger than Matt’s right leg is his heart. A strong, honest soul, he’s one of those people that can disagree without hurting anyone’s feelings.
He’s a hard worker, so he rarely stops welding to come upstairs. But once in a while I’ll see him walk by with a couple pieces of wheat bread headed for the fridge. A few minutes pass before he reappears with a vegetarian sausage wrapped in a slice of bread. Matt will stand in front my desk and we’ll talk about things outside the realm of Moots. He’s refurbishing an old steel frame right now, is contemplating a new tattoo, he wants to get a dog, his sister lives in Karabiti where people will bite your nose off if they’re jealous of you.
I can see up his nose, where the inside is pierced, and when he talks the barbells hanging from his tongue glisten. His ears are pierced and stretched; he wears shorts and a winter hat that keeps his welding helmet from slipping.
Matt always knows when thing are on sale at the grocery store. He reads the weekly newspaper circular religiously every Wednesday. On Thursdays he gives me the scoop. Mangoes are 10 for $10 and pasta sauce is half off. It’s a weird little ritual, but we like it.
Matt’s one of our welders. He came from the far reaches of the Nor’ Eastern states where he grew up in Waterbury CT with his mom, dad and three sisters. Having three sisters meant that he never had hand-me-down clothes, which is always a plus for pre-pubescent boys. I imagine that this was the beginning of Matt’s singular expression, as an adult now he seems to have an individual style and strong sense of self.
Out of school, Matt wanted to work on bikes. So he started as a mechanic and eventually became a fabricator. Now he seems happy to quietly weld frames all day.
Naturally, Matt’s favorite childhood activity was riding his bike. He rode his first bike, a red trash-score with pinstripes until he was six. He started his formative cycling years on this bike with his first crash. –A brilliant wheelie attempt that broke his stem and smashed his face. Luckily, he didn’t need stitches and his uncle was able to weld the stem back together.
Nowadays, Matt rides a teal fixie to work. It’s got fenders and flipped bars. Sometimes we catch up with each other on the bike path, those are my favorite commutes.
Matt enjoys the movies Heat, Big Fish and Grandma’s Boy, as well as the books Where The Wild Things Are (he looks suspiciously like Max), The Lorax and Socks for Supper. He calls his mom every Wednesday and Sunday and his favorite foods include Neutella, pizza and tacos. The only state he hasn’t been to is Alaska, he decided to be vegetarian based on a bet he made eleven years ago and the coolest thing he ever saw was Bryce Canyon at Sunset.
